A single mother of three young children, Polly was hit very hard by a diagnosis of breast cancer. She was in shock and felt as if she “had been kicked in the stomach,” but remained determined to keep family life as normal as possible for her boys of seven, four and two. She wasn’t prepared for the huge impact of chemotherapy, with treatment leaving her completely exhausted, unable to do anything at all. Some friends suggested that she see how Welcare might help.
The Welcare team immediately stepped in by arranging support from an experienced volunteer, Louise. For 18 months, Louise was a source of comfort, support and an extra pair of hands for Polly and her young family. Polly says; “I was always exhausted after the school run, but the children really looked forward to seeing Louise, and she really put herself out to help with the school work.” The Welcare team also arranged and provided initial funding for a twice weekly child minder, as well as a group trip to a local farm.
Polly fondly remembers her son’s pride when, with the dedicated help of Louise, he began getting full marks for his homework. Thankfully Polly has now received the all clear and is once again able to fully focus herself on her children. She says: “If I come across somebody who has a situation where they need help I would suggest going to Welcare, definitely.” Donations such as yours enable us to help more people like Polly and her sons to empower themselves and improve their lives for a better future.
